The Promotion of Affordable Housing

Bimkom is a key partner in the Coalition for Affordable Housing which focuses on policy matters regarding affordable and inclusive housing in Israel.

Our work in the Coalition centers on pressing the National Housing Committees (NHC) to include affordable housing in plans that they approve. While these Committees have the authority to intervene in the market rate of rental housing units, they have thus far not used their authority to designate adequate affordable rental housing .

Urban Renewal

Urban renewal in Israel is practically synonymous with urban densification. However very few of the urban densificaiton projects initiated by the government  ever come to fruition because they are so fundamentally flawed.

Thus, the government continues to invest in drafting these proposals which are ineffectual, all the while the demand for housing continues to grow and prices continue to rise.

Socially-economically weaker communities are pushed out to peripheral urban areas, worsening the profound decline in already weakened urban centers of the country.

To that end, Bimkom has conducted a comprehensive research report into various urban renewal strategies in Israel and abroad, including recommendations for workable, equitable solutions.
