Affordable Housing and Urbanism
The Need for Affordable Housing in Israel
The need for affordable housing in Israel, has received wide-spread publicity thanks to the social protests of 2011, however, the government has failed to make any real and significant changes. Public resources assigned for housing continue to diminish, much as they have over the past two decades, and at the same time, the government continues to limit its involvement in areas such as mortgage subsidies, public housing projects and urban renewal. The unregulated private market, motivated strictly by financial considerations, provides an inadequate response to the needs of various and diverse populations, including families with medium and low incomes. As a result, more and more households find themselves forced to choose between adequate housing and other basic needs.
The Effect of Housing Policy on Society
Housing policies have far-reaching impact on the lives of residents including potential for social and economic advancement. They allow for a greater or lesser degree of access to proper infrastructure and vital services such as education, healthcare and employment. Therefore, housing policy has the power to increase or reduce social gaps, and to prevent or allow the formation of concentrations of poverty.
Bimkom’s Intervention:
Bimkom advocates for changes to housing policy that include the integration of groups of residents from different income levels and social backgrounds thereby enabling low and moderate income households to enjoy the same variety of opportunities that residents of more affluent neighborhoods enjoy.
We promote Affordable Housing as key partner in the Coalition for Affordable Housing which focuses on policy matters regarding affordable and inclusive housing in Israel.
We advance Urban Renewal through advocacy for a more holistic and inclusive approach to urban renewal, one that includes the needs of population groups who are generally unable to purchase or rent housing units in new development projects which usually replace existing affordable units.
Bimkom Raises Public Awareness among the the public as well as decision makers regarding the need for affordable housing.
